Location and Training

Los Angeles Helicopters is located at Long Beach Airport (LGB), a Los Angeles based class “D” airspace. Long Beach Airport has three designated training company helipads. It is a tower controlled airport whose air traffic controllers are very accustomed to working with student pilots. Receiving your helicopter training here will develop your radio communication skills and instill confidence, which will help you deal with any air traffic control situation in the world.

Aside from working at the airport itself, additional training is carried out above the local mountain ranges, coastal areas and harbor. This gives students the practice and confidence to operate the aircraft in complex environments.

It is our policy to give students the most comprehensive training possible. To meet the cross-country requirements we allow our students to plan lengthy overnight trips to places as far as Las Vegas and San Francisco. Many schools restrict students to short cross-country trips and do not permit overnight stays.

Other exercises include landing at very high activity airports such as Los Angeles International (LAX). Here you must not only be confident and proficient in dealing with air traffic control, but be skilled on the controls as well in order to land on the LAX helipad which is located on top of a multi-story parking structure surrounded by arriving and departing aircraft.

As challenging as these activities sound, Los Angeles Helicopters does an excellent job of preparing you for diverse flight conditions. Completing these operations will give you the confidence to be able to fly anywhere in the world under any circumstance. You'll be one of the best!

The weather in Southern California is excellent for year round training, which is important for new pilots. Very few days each year are lost to poor weather conditions, but don’t be fooled by what you see on television, southern California offers diverse flying conditions thanks to our local mountain ranges. We do have the best flying climate in the U.S. because we can find about any type of weather.

Pilot Shop & Restaurant

Los Angeles Helicopters is within walking distance of a fully stocked Pilot Shop. The "Pilot Shop" will cater to all of your piloting needs which includes FAA written test books, Helicopter Head sets, area charts and all the books you will need to complete your selected course. The "Pilot Shop" is sympathetic to the needs of Los Angeles Helicopters students and offers discounts to our students on select materials.

Being conveniently located next door to the Long Beach Airport (LGB) terminal building allows our students to take advantage of the terminal’s Coffee shop, novelty store and full service restaurant that serves Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner overlooking the airport runways. The convenience of being located at LGB ensures that no time is wasted driving around searching for meals if you are on a time constraint. Our instructors highly recommend the restaurant and local services.

Close to Medical Examiner

Once you have settled in, Los Angeles Helicopters will make arrangements for you to have an appropriate flight physical examination with a local FAA medical examiner. The type of medical examination required will depend only on the course you have enrolled in (Private / Commercial / CFI). The medical examination fee typically costs $75 US dollars.

A Working Vacation

Even the most dedicated student will not be flying or studying every hour of the week. California is a world unto itself and our students enjoy the recreational activities and sightseeing in such places as: Malibu Beach, Disneyland, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Rodeo Drive, Knotts Berry Farm, Magic Mountain, Universal Studios, The Queen Mary, Sea World, and the Getty Center.

The Los Angeles Helicopters staff is more than happy to help point out the local ‘hot-spots’ for you to visit and will make sure that you enjoy the time you spend in Los Angeles with us.
