What is a Helicopter Certified Flight Instructor Add-on Rating?
A helicopter CFI add-on rating allows you to add a Rotorcraft category and/or a Helicopter class rating to your existing CFI rating.

How Long Will it Take?
The length of time that is required to complete a CFI add-on course depends largely on your ability, motivation to learn and your proficiency with the English language. It usually takes about eight weeks to complete the helicopter CFI add-on course if a reasonably full schedule is maintained.
What Will I Have to Do?
- Complete ground school or a home study course for the Robinson R22.
- Log sufficient flight training
- Pass an FAA oral and flight test.
What are the Official Flight Training Requirements?
According to the 2004 FAR, requirements for obtaining your CFI pilot helicopter add-on rating are as follow:
- At least 200 hours helicopter flight time
- At least 50 hours must be in a Robinson R22 helicopter
- 3 hours in preparation for the flight test
