How Long Will it Take?

The length of time that is required to complete a private pilot add-on course depends largely on your ability, motivation to learn and your proficiency with the English language. It usually takes about six weeks to complete the private pilot helicopter add-on course if a reasonably full schedule is maintained.

What Will I Have to Do?

  1. Complete ground school or a home study course for the Robinson R22.
  2. Log sufficient flight training
  3. Pass an FAA oral and flight test.

What are the Official Flight Training Requirements?

According to the 2004 FAR, requirements for obtaining your private pilot helicopter license are as follow:

  • 30 hours minimum helicopter flight time, including:
    • 20 hours dual flight instruction, including
      • 3 hours in preparation for the flight test
      • 3 hours of night flight, including 50NM x-country and 10 take offs and landings
      • 3 hours in preparation for the flight test
    • 10 hours solo flight time, including
      • 3 hours of cross-country flight, including 75NM x-country
