What is the R22 Transition Course?

The R22 Transition course requires that participants hold a minimum of a private helicopter pilot license. This course is designed to train the pilot how to safely fly the Robinson R22.

How Long Will it Take?

The length of time required to complete the R22 transition course depends largely on your ability, motivation to learn and the proficiency with the English language. It usually takes about 10 days to complete the R22 transition course if a reasonably full schedule is maintained.

What Will I Have to Do?

  1. Currently hold an FAA private helicopter pilot's license.
  2. Obtain an FAA third class medical certificate (minimum).
  3. Complete ground school or a home study course for the Robinson R-22.
  4. Log sufficient flight training.
  5. Pass an Los Angeles Helicopters written test.
  6. Pass an Los Angeles Helicopters oral test.

What are the Official Flight Training Requirements?

According to Special Federal Aviation Regulations (SFAR), the requirements for transitioning to the Robinson R22 / R44 helicopters are as follow:

  • At least 20 hours of helicopter flight time
    • At least 10 hours must be in a Robinson R22 helicopter
