What are the R44 Transition Courses?

The R44 Transition courses require that participants hold a minimum of a private helicopter pilot license. These courses are designed to train the pilot how to safely fly the Robinson R44. Los Angeles Helicopters offers two options when transitioning to the R44, depending solely on the pilot's R22 flight experience.

How Long Will it Take?

The length of time that is required to complete the R44 transition courses depends largely on your ability, motivation to learn and the proficiency with the English language. If a reasonably full schedule is maintained, it usually takes about 10 days to complete the R44 transition course for pilots with no R22 experience, and 5 days for those with 10 hours of R22 experience.

What Will I Have to Do?

  1. Currently hold an FAA private helicopter pilot's license
  2. Obtain an FAA third class medical certificate (minimum)
  3. Complete ground school or a home study course for the Robinson R44
  4. Log sufficient flight training
  5. Pass an Los Angeles Helicopters written test
  6. Pass an Los Angeles Helicopters flight test

What are the Official Flight Training Requirements?

According to Special Federal Aviation Regulations (SFAR) the requirements for transitioning to the Robinson R22 / R44 helicopters are as follow:

  • At least 20 hours of helicopter flight time
    • 10 hours minimum in a Robinson R22 or R44 helicopter
    • 5 hours minimum in a Robinson R44 helicopter
